MWC Youth Task Force gets into gear

Strasbourg, France – A new Youth Task Force (YTF) began envisioning future agenda for Mennonite World Conference youth and young adults at meetings here Feb. 22-28. It was the first time the young adult team with representatives from five continental regions met.

The YTF is the continuation of AMIGOS, the earlier MWC youth committee which worked from 2004 -2009. Its short-term mandate is to formulate the vision, focus, structure and MWC programs for global youth and young adults, based on feedback gathered during the Global Youth Summit in Paraguay in July 2009 and the six-year experience of AMIGOS.

“MWC Executive Committee members affirmed the formation and personnel of the Youth Task Force in Paraguay last year. This was, in fact, the new MWC Executive Committee's first decision, an encouraging sign that executive members see connecting with youth as a high priority,” said Elina Ciptadi-Perkins, former AMIGOS chairperson who now serves as staff person for the YTF.

The five members of the YTF are: Carlos Alvarez Woo, Colombia; Ayub Omondi Awich, Kenya; Melani Susanti, Indonesia; Kristina Toews, Canada; and Marc Pasqués, Spain. All were delegates to the 2009 Global Youth Summit.

“During AMIGOS’ six-year tenure, the strong desire in MWC to listen to and to involve young people in church leadership and decision making was very encouraging. At the same time, there was increased eagerness from young people to be more connected both with their peers around the world and with churches everywhere. Transforming this momentum into a sustainable movement is a top priority for MWC,” said Larry Miller, MWC general secretary.

This envisioning team will present a first draft of its proposal to the Executive Committee in July 2010 in Ethiopia. The aim is to then receive feedback from young Anabaptists worldwide and to make revisions prior to presenting a final proposal in 2011. Upon approval of the proposal by the Executive Committee, the MWC Youth Task Force will be replaced by another youth committee that will implement the plans set out by the Youth Task Force until the next Global Youth Summit.
